If you want to protect the information on your hard drive while you are away from your Macintosh, use Security. If you lose a hard drive or Syquest cartridge, CDU can also provide the person who finds it with information on how to contact you.
You can set up Security to activate whenever you start up, whenever the timer lapses, or both.
Security can display a dialog box requesting a password, or it can display a screen image which must be clicked at the right spot. In either case the correct response is required before any information can be accessed on the hard drive.
• Turn security on to control access everytime the Macintosh is started.
• Adjust the Auto-Security Delay slide bar to the amount of idle time you want to wait before security will be activated.
• Typing the key combination listed under Instant Security will immediately lock the Macintosh into requiring the password or graphic key. You can modify this Instant Security hot key by selecting the long box and typing a new key combination.
• Choose Password or Graphic Security by clicking one of the two radio buttons. The display below the Use Password/Use Graphic line changes depending on which button is selected. (See below.)
If you lose your password restart the Macintosh with a System diskette. Go into the Security panel and turn off Security until you remember the password.
Later, if you can’t remember the password, go into the Preferences folder in your System Folder and drag the CDU Prefs folder into the Trash. You’ll have to open the CDU control panel and set up all the settings again.
If you turn on Security, it will be active even if you disable CDU, or take it off your hard drive! If you want to turn off Security, use the CDU control panel.
Password Security
1.The first time you select this, there is no password. The Old Password box shows <none>. Type a password twice, once in New Password and again in Verify. Press Return. Password Security is enabled.
2. Later, once a password has been set, the Old Password box title will be empty. To change passwords, you must first type the old password in the Old Password box. Then go to New Password and Verify as above.
3. When Password Security is triggered (by booting or waking a screen dimmed Macintosh), a dialog box appears, asking for the password. The contact information you entered when you first installed CDU will also be on this startup screen. If you ever want to modify this screen, select Configure User from the User pop-up menu and make your changes in the dialog box that appears.
 
Graphic Security
1. If you select Use Graphic click Choose Picture File. This lets you select a file containing a graphic image that will be displayed when you boot.
 
2. The graphic must be a PICT file. There are three PICT files in a folder called Sample Pictures in the original CDU folder for you to use. You can also create your own PICTs by using the built-in screen capture capability of the Macintosh. To create a screen capture PICT, close the window. Lay out a screen (by opening folders, running applications, etc.) that you want as the Security graphic. Type Command-Shift-3. This will create a new document at the top level of your hard drive called Picture 1. (If you make another one it will be called Picture 2, and so on.) This is a PICT that Security can use.
Now go back into Security, click the Choose Picture File button, and select Picture 1 (or a PICT from Sample Pictures) using the dialog box that appears. Click Open.
3. When you select the PICT you want, a new dialog box will appear explaining how to select a hot spot. The hot spot is a secret location on the graphic that you will click to pass Security. It is the graphical equivalent of a password. Read the dialog box and click OK.
4. Your PICT will now appear. The cursor will be a Pointing Finger icon. To select a hot spot move the cursor to one corner of the area you want to make hot. Click and drag the cursor. The selected hot spot will be outlined. If you change your mind, just do this again in a different spot.
 
5. Click once inside the flashing box you created. If you want to use a modifier key, hold one down while you click. (You can actually use any combination of modifier keys plus up to two letter keys.) You’ll have to use that key from now on to get through this hot spot.
6. Read the dialog box and click Verify.
7. Click in the hot spot again to verify, (using the modifier key if you did before.) Security is now installed. The name of the PICT will appear next to the Graphic File: title.

If you turn on Security, it will be active even if you disable CDU, or take it out of your System Folder! If you want to turn off Security, use the CDU control panel.
